In which Latham loves you then leaves you

As I predicted last week, Mark Loathsome has quit One Nation

…just not for the reason I expected…

New South Wales upper house MPs Mark Latham and Rod Roberts have resigned from One Nation.
Mr Latham has tabled a letter in parliament alleging the party tried to funnel money from the NSW Electoral Commission.
Addressing the Legislative Council, Mr Latham said he cannot remain a One Nation MP due to past attempts of allegedly “defrauding NSW electoral funds”.

Oh.

So, according to Mark, he was informed in September 2021 that something was wrong with the NSW branch of ON’s finances, namely that they were being diverted to the Brisbane office of the party. Understandably, Mark cracked the shits and threatened the party’s national director with getting the police involved, whereupon the problem mysteriously ceased (and Pauline was NOT happy).

If this story is indeed true, then this is what I took from it:

1. Latham did this cos they were making his job harder, not because he thought it was the morally correct thing to do. Rod Roberts might be citing the party’s lack of morals in his resignation note, but I don’t think Latham really gives a shit about that;
2. Having dealt with the issue, Latham then continued to be part of One Nation, which again suggests to me this business about the Brisbane office misusing funds wasn’t enough of a moral problem for him to actually quit the party.

Regardless of the truth or otherwise of the story, though, it’s still not the real reason Latham’s jumped ship, which is, obviously, the bullshit from last week. All of this is about him being fucked over by Pauline and nothing to do with his outrage at the party’s bad behaviour; this other business is just a handy club he can hit them with on the way out… In any case, I just wonder what’ll happen next, if he’ll stay a lone independent or form his own party; I feel like he doesn’t have the sufficient cult of personality for the latter, but then again Bob Katter manages somehow… I rather doubt any other existing party will take him on, so could we perhaps even be looking at the end of the tedious cunt? We can always hope…

Mark Latham seems surprised for some reason

The children are squabbling again:

One Nation MP Mark Latham says he has been ousted as leader of the party in New South Wales.
Mr Latham said in a Facebook post federal leader Pauline Hanson removed him from the job “without consultation or due process”.
“Senator Hanson has installed a new state executive with no leader,” he said.
Mr Latham remains a member of the One Nation party.

Wherein lies the only real surprise in this story; I find it odd that she didn’t dump him entirely, and even more so that he hasn’t stomped off with his ball and gone home himself. (Not yet, anyway; I do expect him to tender his resignation in the huffiest possible way within the next few days.) It continues:

In a statement, Senator Hanson said the party chose to appoint a new leader in NSW “following the recent state election which saw [the party’s] vote drop by 14 per cent”.
“The national executive of the party has also declared vacant the position of NSW parliamentary leader while the review takes place,” the statement read.
Mr Latham, however, said he remained the leader of the “parliamentary team”.
“This is a matter, quite rightly, for me, Rod Roberts and Tania Mihailuk. I remain as the leader of our parliamentary team,” he said.
“Over the past 5 years we have built up into the largest One Nation parliamentary party in the country— so where’s the problem?”

Well, Mark, the problem is kind of twofold.

One, the party is called Pauline Hanson’s One Nation. Her name is in the name of the organisation. The Libs don’t call themselves Robert Menzies’ Liberal Party. The party is about her and her ego. You presided over a drop in her party’s popularity in NSW. That’s not a good look.

Two, frankly, you exist. You’re Mark Latham. You’re a liability to whoever you’re working with. Even the Liberal Democrats had enough sense to tell you to go fuck yourself when you offered to run for them. Have you forgotten about being sued by Alex Greenwich for vilifying him with comments that even Pauline criticised you for? (I’d be worried if you had, given that you’re currently engaged in defending yourself in that case…) Legal action is never a good look either.

Look, the fact that Mark Latham ultimately shacked up politically with One Nation was not really surprising (except in that he joined someone else’s party rather than starting his own); he’d clearly moved so far to the right that PHON was the logical last stop for him without leaving the political mainstream entirely. And the fact that it seems to have ended badly… also not surprising in the least; those two planet-sized egos were bound to clash eventually and Latham was, frankly, always going to be Latham because he’s incapable of doing anything else. Only surprising that it’s taken so long for the shit and the fan to collide.

Straight Lathams matter

Alas, Mark Loathsome has been discovered by by George Takei, which means Australia has failed to keep this piece of shit within its borders and thereby protect the rest of the world from him. Sorry, other countries. We evidently did not do our best.

This is the article on George’s site, which quotes Mark thus:

“We love the gays but it’s overdue to recognise the Heteros with our flag, parade, International Day, UN evoys [sic], special footy round and jersey and Welcome to Bed ceremonies.”

“Welcome to Bed” indeed. Couldn’t help but slip a bit of racism into the mix, could we, Mark? Heteros are great, especially when they’re white…

I was reminded of the famous “straight lives matter” rally here in Sydney in 2017, which only about 20 people showed up to. I don’t know, maybe people realised the event was being run by crypto-Nazis and didn’t want anything to do with it because of that. Or maybe not all straight people are as insecure and paranoid about their sexuality as the likes of Latham are…
