Being for the benefit (?) of Mr Brown

HEY look what I just did! An honest to god/dess MIXCLOUD post! Yes, a MIX! Haven’t finished one of those since January, it seems. More to the point, I put this together for the estimable RM Brown, cos someone on a recent “quomments” episode for his Patreon subscribers said something to him about him knowing Australian music or not, and someone else put up a Spotify playlist of some, and that made me think “fuck, I should do something like that”. So, over the last couple of days, I did something like that, and here it is… focusing on the more punk/garage/post-punk end of things from 1977-88, with a few NZ acts of similar kind and vintage for additional texture; it ranges from the bleeding obvious to the “what was that?”, and has the additional benefit of you being able to hear Lubricated Goat without having to look at them naked. Hopefully Aroon finds this useful and interesting. and if he does I’ll do a followup that’s not quite as abrasive as this one sometimes get…

Another to detonate

Remember when I used to do these? Yeah. Just got the notion to do a new one a few days ago. Took a bit longer than usual cos instead of doing it my usual, i.e. picking a bunch of tracks I want to play and semi-randomly assembling them, I decided to be much more deliberate about it. The main problem was the end, which I had a particular song in mind for but getting the last 20 minutes or so to that point wasn’t working so I redid the entire bit (thnk it’s an improvement, fortunately). I think it works, the end result is maybe a bit chaotic… I don’t know, you decide.

So let’s be honest, I am disappointed in the response, or lack thereof to be more accurate, to these mixes I’ve been making… thus far, the most listeners any of them has been 29, several of the others have barely made it into double figures, and some haven’t even made it that far. It’s hard not to feel like I’m wasting my time and effort a bit… so, obviously, the logical thing to do was really waste my time and effort by making a two-hour extravaganza… but the thing is, I’m particularly happy with the result, rather more so than many of the other episodes I’ve done so far, and I’m particularly happy with next week’s too which is in pretty much the same vein. I possibly should’ve been doing two-hour mixes all along, even though they do take more effort… anyway, for the three people who are likely to be interested, here’s this week’s episode.

I hope you’re pleased with what you’ve done

Once more unto the 80s pop stuff. Playlist:

    1. Phil Seymour, Precious to Me
    2. Pete Townshend, And I Moved
    3. Tears for Fears, Pale Shelter
    4. Duran Duran, Careless Memories
    5. Thomas Dolby, Hyperactive

    8. Grace Jones, Pull Up to the Bumper
    9. Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Forever Live and Die
    10. The Moody Blues, Gemini Dream
    11. Fischer Z, So Long
    12. Icehouse, Love in Motion
    13. James Freud & The Radio Stars, Modern Girl
    14. Stevie Wonder, Do I Do

Parenthetically, I was fascinated to discover the other day that Pete Townshend wrote that song for Bette Midler, who ultimately chose not to record it for whatever reason, so Pete did it himself. It does make more sense, I suppose to be sung by a female singer, but it’s a lot more interesting with a male one. Especially when you remember it was 1980 when he did it…

Hope you brought your parachute with you

As promised last week, another batch of late 60s goodness, this time focusing on the psychedelic rock movement, featuring some of the more wilfully out-there examples of same. I’m kind of impressed that Hendrix just hid that track on a single B-side; if he’d stuck that on Axis instead of “If 6 Was 9”, I’d like that album more than I do…

    1. The 13th Floor Elevators, Reverberation (Doubt)
    2. The Beatles, Tomorrow Never Knows
    3. The Bees, Voices Green and Purple
    4. Art, Supernatural Fairy Tales
    5. The Pretty Things, Defecting Gray
    6. Cream, Tales of Brave Ulysses
    7. The Electric Prunes, Long Day’s Flight
    8. The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Stars That Play With Laughing Sam’s Dice
    9. The Valentines, Peculiar Hole in the Sky
    10. Pink Floyd, Point Me at the Sky
    11. The Hooterville Trolley, No Silver Bird
    12. P. Lovecraft, At the Mountains of Madness
    13. The Gods, Misleading Colours
    14. Love, Your Mind and We Belong Together
    15. Arzachel, Azathoth
    16. Kaleidoscope, (Love Song) For Annie
    17. The Dave Miller Set, Mr Guy Fawkes

Where the shadows run from themselves

Back to the 60s (well, the period 1966-70) again this week. Much like I went for fairly common and well-known 80s acts in the previous mix, I kind of did the same this time round, only going back a decade or so, obviously. I’ve already got next week’s mix done, it’s another 60s mix, and will feature some more obtuse and out of the way bands and song choices. In the meantime, however, here’s this week’s selections:

    1. The Beatles, Rain
    2. Love, 7 and 7 Is
    3. The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Stone Free
    4. The Byrds, Have You Seen Her Face
    5. The Rolling Stones, We Love You
    6. Moby Grape, Omaha
    7. The Who, I Can See for Miles
    8. Cream, White Room

    12. The Velvet Underground, What Goes On
    13. Neil Young, I’ve Been Waiting for You
    14. Crosby Stills & Nash, Long Time Gone
    15. Led Zeppelin, Out on the Tiles
    16. Santana, Hope You’re Feeling Better
    17. Fleetwood Mac, The Green Manalishi

Heart shaped hedges, Japanese gardens

Submitted as evidence that not everything I play here is fuzzy obnoxiousness, weird post-punk, and so forth. A fair bit of it is, to be sure, but sometimes a man’s just got to submit to the pleasures of perfectly mainstream pop/rock.

    1. Elvis Costello & The Attractions, Accidents Will Happen
    2. Japan, Quiet Life
    3. Split Enz, One Step Ahead
    4. Ultravox, The Thin Wall
    5. Roxy Music, More Than This
    6. The Church, Almost With You
    7. Depeche Mode, Leave in Silence
    8. Simple Minds, Glittering Prize
    9. ABC, All of My Heart
    10. Duran Duran, My Own Way (Carnival remix)
    11. John Foxx, Endlessly
    12. Lou Reed, I Love You Suzanne
    13. INXS, Johnson’s Aeroplane
    14. New Order, Thieves Likes Us

And blood and wine were on his hands

Well, then, let’s get on with something comparatively frivolous. Stuffed to the gills with uptempo chart smashes and pop hits that’ll have you snapping your fingers, tapping your feet, singing in the shower and all that jazz, it’s nothing if not colossal and upbeat… or at least it might be if it actually were, which it isn’t. This is what it actually is instead:

    1. The Jesus & Mary Chain, Kill Surf City
    2. Slab!, Fourth Warning
    3. Age of Chance, Bible of the Beats
    4. Killing Joke, Bloodsport
    5. Yello, Crash Dance
    6. Johnson Engineering Co., Full Circle
    7. Loop, Black Sun
    8. Play Dead, In Silence
    9. Executive Slacks, In and Out
    10. Crime & The City Solution, Her Room of Lights (For Lisa)
    11. Helios Creed, Sex Voodoo Venus
    12. Virgin Prunes, Theme for Thought
    13. Material, Detached
    14. Scientists, Human Jukebox
