Parenthetically, I was fascinated to discover the other day that Pete Townshend wrote that song for Bette Midler, who ultimately chose not to record it for whatever reason, so Pete did it himself. It does make more sense, I suppose to be sung by a female singer, but it’s a lot more interesting with a male one. Especially when you remember it was 1980 when he did it…
